En 2018 se retomaron los trabajos sobre éste fósil y los paleontólogos descubrieron que había sido mordido por al menos dos carnívoros, lo que desafía la creencia de que para que un cuerpo se conserve debe ser enterrado rápidamente.
Sin embargo, esta “pata momificada” estuvo expuesto a la intemperie y a los carroñeros, entonces ¿Cómo fue posible su fosilización?
Según los científicos, los orificios generados por las mordidas de los carroñeros permitieron que los gases, fluidos y microbios salieran del cuerpo antes de que lo descompusieran por completo.
De esta manera la piel del animal pudo desecarse antes de ser enterrada e iniciar el proceso de fosilización que le permitió llegar en un estado de conservación inédito hasta nuestros días.
